Ten Significant American Signatures That Aren't From Founders or Framers

Obviously, we spend a lot of time talking about signatures here at SIGNiX. When it comes to our business, we try to explain the difference between the mere image of a signature associated with a digital document (which is how a lot of simple e-signatures work) and the sophisticated exchange of public and private cryptographic keys that make our true digital signature more secure, more private, and more legally durable.

The point here, whether we're talking pen-to-paper or PDF, is that a signature is so much more than a mark on a page. It's even more than the complex legal ideas it represents. A signature is an artifact that says something about who we are as people, and what we want in a moment of our lives.

How can digital signatures improve data privacy for healthcare?

Data privacy has taken on new urgency in the past year. Tech visionaries once praised as architects of a connected world now face tough questions—and strict regulations—concerning how they collect, process, and manage personal data.

Nowhere is personally identifiable information (PII) more closely scrutinized than in the healthcare industry. Back in 2014, we asked eminent data privacy and legal expert Timothy Reiniger to discuss how SIGNIX digital signature technology provides critical safeguards and secure data access for health information exchanges. His comments have proved prescient and durable.

How does public key crytography improve security?

After relying on ink signatures for decades, highly regulated industries like real estate, financial services, healthcare, banking, and government have finally begun to adopt paperless workflows in the past several years. As these industries enter a phase of mainstream adoption, they must ensure that data and legal evidence is reliably captured, efficiently processed, and independently available for years, decades, or even generations.

True digital signatures—such as those enabled by the SIGNiX platform—provide the highest levels of security, data privacy, and legal evidence capture available. But how exactly does a digital signature outperform simple, proprietary e-signature at the technological level?

Simple e-signatures vs. true digital signatures: which is right for your business?

It’s useful to divide the entire spectrum of e-signatures into two camps: simple e-signatures with lightweight legal durability, and powerful digital signatures which provide security, data privacy, and superior legal evidence.

Paper Slowed Them Down

Food Industries Credit Union had just rebranded as Gateway Credit Union, and they had work to do. Their loan application process involved mailing out loan applications, waiting on them to return, correcting errors, and finally signing on the dotted line. Each step required too much time and unnecessary repetition. If the newly branded Gateway Credit Union was going to make good on its mission to expand to new members beyond the food industry, they would need a loan application process that was faster, more cost effective, and just plain better.

Tips for Government Agencies Going Digital

Local government agencies and offices aren’t always known for speed or convenience when it comes to processing paperwork. The County of San Diego has made great strides over the past few years, however, to change that perception. We are using technology to improve efficiency, simplify processes, ensure privacy, save money and, most importantly, make things easier for our constituents. One of the main ways we are doing that is through our partnership with SIGNiX, which began in 2013.

Top 3 Keys for an Awesome Customer Experience

The way businesses interact with customers has been changing. Companies can no longer use a “build it and they will come” mentality—because customers no longer make purchases based solely on the quality of a product or service. While quality is, of course, still very important, the driving differentiator is now the customer experience.

Financial services firms handle a high volume of high-value transactions, many of which contain sensitive information, including social security numbers, account numbers, personal information and more. That’s why it’s distressing that, despite its myriad regulations, the banking and financial services industry falls victim to more fraud cases each year than any other industry, according to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Firms and chief security officers must look for surer methods to safeguard their data and the clients they serve.

Find the One Right E-Signature Solution to Meet all of Your Needs

It wasn’t that long ago that some people would use two pens: one with black ink for everyday stuff like writing notes and making annotations to documents, and another with blue ink for signatures. The belief was that the blue ink added a level of security to the document, and if a letter had a signature in black, it was a photocopy. This was an adequate system at the time, but not convenient or secure, especially when scanners and computers became commonplace.

The Top 3 Reasons to Use Electronic Notarizations Now

Many highly regulated industries, such as financial services and real estate, have transitioned to secure, electronic workflows for the level of protection and convenience they offer. But when a document needs additional approval in the form of a notarization, that digital process is fragmented and ends up back on paper. By introducing electronic notarizations, however, the digital process can continue seamlessly.

Our EVP Pem Guerry recently wrote an article for RISMedia’s Housecall that lists the top three reasons to begin using remote electronic notarizations

E-Notarization Beginning to Gain Traction Nationwide

The continuous expansion of digital signature technology has led to the development of the electronic notarization, or e-notarization, process. According to a white paper published by the National Notary Association, there are two main types of e-notarizations gaining traction in the United States: in-person e-notarization and remote e-notarization.

Why Remote E-Notarizations are the Way of the Future

After decades of the traditional, inconvenient, paper-laden approval process, official notarizations are now being performed electronically and remotely. And the technology behind it all is starting to gain national attention by some of the biggest names in the notary, finance and government industries.

The National Notary Association (NNA) recently published a white paper about the growing support for e-notarization and how it works. (And to demonstrate the remote e-notarization process for white paper readers, the NNA featured SIGNiX’s demo video of a remote e-notarization.)

Restoring Order to NIGO Documents with Digital Technology

At last, you’ve outlined annuity plan options for your client and answered every question he had about each one. It’s time to close the deal. You gather all the necessary paperwork to review with your client, and then you send it off for approval. But the approval process can take anywhere from days to weeks – and what happens if your client’s application is reported to be “not in good order” (NIGO)? You and your client would then start the application process again, losing time while you duplicate your efforts.

It’s a complicated world out there, and the never ending changes in technology and regulation keep everyone on their toes and/or fearful of what they missed. When it comes to compliance, whether you’re implementing EHR technology, e-signature technology or really any new system or process, there’s a laundry list of regulations to follow. You have HIPAA, the HITECH Act, the Meaningful Use Rule, PCI DSS and the list goes on. I call it the alphabet soup of compliance.  As often happens, regulatory compliance may by siloed by each of those acronyms leaving more of an opportunity to miss something or to duplicate efforts creating confusion for staff and customers.

What Makes an E-Signature SEC & FINRA Compliant?

E-signatures have been considered legal in the United States for over 16 years now. On June 30, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN Act), which changed the digital landscape. Before the ESIGN Act, documents were being signed electronically by some businesses, but their legal validity was put into question. This was especially true for businesses in highly regulated industries, such as healthcare and financial services, which are regulated by governing entities that require adherence to stringent compliance standards. The ESIGN Act offers a solid legal foundation to stand upon, but highly regulated industries are obligated to up the ante to ensure legal acceptance.

However, the insurance industry has been slow to the party with historically low single-digit eConsent adoption rates (partly because advisors own the email address, whereas carriers have the fiduciary obligation to deliver compliance content).

SIGNiX’s Pem Guerry Shares Insight on Video Tech for Mortgage Closings

Gathering around a table to close a mortgage may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to the integration of e-signature, e-notarization and video technology.

Our EVP Pem Guerry was recently interviewed by MortgageOrb for an expert Q&A on video’s future in the mortgage industry.

He told MortgageOrb:

“Doing business immediately and remotely has tremendous benefits in reducing costs and delays while increasing customer convenience. For certain types of transactions, such as those with a need for notarization, video is essential for remote execution. It virtually connects a notary public to individuals who need notarizations anywhere in the world. And further, Virginia law requires both audio and video recordings of remote e-notarizations. We expect video to become increasingly common.”

6 Things to Ask Your E-Signature Vendor – BEFORE Signing a Contract!

Choosing an e-signature solution so your business can sign documents online is a pretty straightforward process. You examine the ins and outs of independence, security, compliance and price. Then, you pick a solution that best meets your needs.

Choosing an e-signature partner to embed its solution into your technology platform – well, that’s a bit more complicated. You’re not just trying to meet your company’s own e-signing needs, you’re looking for a company to strategically collaborate with you to better serve your customers and add value to your technology offering.

Adding e-signature capabilities to tech solutions requires the right integration strategy, sales journey and collaborative support. There’s a lot more at stake, and you need to know your partner will shine in a long-term relationship.

Let’s Make Two-Factor Authentication More Prominent in Healthcare Than Data Breaches

Two-factor authentication is a vital extra layer of protection in today’s world where digital information is always vulnerable. One of the most common ways to authenticate a person (to prove they are who they say they are) is username and password. However, this alone is too easy for skilled and experienced hackers.
