Protect Your Real Estate Documents with SMS Authentication

Real estate transactions, such as home purchase contracts, are increasingly happening online. Technology like e-signatures makes it easier and more convenient than ever before to wade through all the necessary paperwork.

But how can you be sure certain your real estate documents containing valuable personal information are safe?

E-signature technology, like our Independent E-Signatures™, boasts inherent security protocols including tamper-evident technology and encryption, but real estate professionals can take it one step further with short message service (SMS) authentication.

With SMS authentication, once a person is authenticated by an email account, the user must also supply the one-time, random passcode he received via a text message to a cell phone. Those two steps combined have to happen successfully before that user can gain access to contracts or other documents that need to be signed.

Our CTO John Harris and Lisa Mihelcich, COO of our real estate partner zipLogix, detailed why SMS authentication is a critical tool for today’s real estate agents.

In the article, they said:

“This digital form of identity authentication is far easier to prove in court as well. When signature discrepancies occur on paper, you would likely need a handwriting analyst to study the details of style, pressure and spacing to determine if any possible fraud may have occurred. With SMS authentication, a digital audit trail will track and record what number the one-time code was sent to, when it was opened, etc. Further, it’s the second layer of proof—not the first, not the only.”
